Jen > We got to our hotel at 3:30 in the afternoon, Glacier Hotel. The setting and remote location was damn impressive. Our room overlooked this lake.
Jen > This is the view of Glacier hotel from the parking lot. We had a very fancy dinner here, with a live pianist to boot! We stayed here two nights, a luxury for us since we'd been on the road for so long.
Jen > Thursday Day 3 of Glacier We tried to hike to Hidden Lake at Logan Pass but failed miserably, because we weren't prepared for the snow, wearing sandals and open sneakers! No one told us that we would be hiking actually on top of a glacier?!!! The rest of the day we spent white water rafting, sitting in the front of the raft enjoying the rapidly paced river. We stayed in West Glacier that night, realizing that it's much cheaper and easier to stay outside of the parks, rather than inside.
Jen > Friday Day 4 of Glacier. After a nice slow morning we come back into Glacier Park but into the northeast portion this time. We stopped at Bowman lake for a swim, but it was so cold that neither of us could stand to stay in the water for very long at all!
Jen > The fire damage around Glacier National park was stark, yet still beautiful. This is an interesting picture because the right side of the street was "back burned" the year before purposefully in order to protect the houses from the raging forest fire on the other side of the mountain.
Jen > This is the destruction that the Glacier forest fires of '03 left in it's wake.
Jen > We arrived in Polebridge around 3:00, after stopping to watch a Bald Eagle circle above us for 10 minutes or so. We stayed at the North Fork Hostel, in a sweet little rustic cabin backing up to the North Fork river. We can hear the river rushing by as we sit on the front porch.
Jen > The hostel is run by an old hippie environmentalist. While we were in the main house, a couple from California stopped in and said that he hadn't been here in 19 years, to which an old guy sitting in the corner replied that he had been sitting there for 16 years!
Jen > Polebridge purposefully doesn't allow the roads coming into to town to be paved or to have electricity. They are a laid back, friendly, but isolationist group of people. We caught the Saturday night volleyball and pizza night at the Northern Lights Saloon, all the locals and their children and dogs came out for this weekly event.
